PDFCreator: Deployment Exits with Error Code 1

4/26/2018 5408 Contributors

When attempting to deploy PDFCreator to targets where PDFCreator is already installed, you receive an error code 1.

This error code may indicate a reboot is required after the PDFCreator package uninstalls the older version of PDFCreator. PDFCreator prefers a reboot after an uninstall, but we ignore that preference. In the majority of cases, there are no adverse impacts in skipping the reboot.

In our testing, a reboot of the target machine resolved the error code 1 received during a deployment.

If a reboot of the target machine did not resolve the error code, it is possible the "PDFCreatorRestart" registry value exists in one of the following locations of the registry:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

To check for the presence of the registry value, you can use PDQ Inventory to scan affected target machines with the Registry Run Keys Scanner.

If a value is present in either or both keys, delete it/them and attempt to redeploy PDFCreator.

  • The information provided regarding the registry values is provided as-is and should be thoroughly tested before introducing into production.
  • The information regarding the registry values and the proposed resolution comes from pdfforge’s forum and blog (comments) and has not been verified. We have been unable to replicate the scenario with the registry values and have therefore been unable to test the issue or the solution. Proceed with extreme caution.
